DB Class 109

Work in progress…

The above is a link to a video uploaded to YouTube by user BahnFan99 showing 109-3 (ex-DB 109 073) departing from Berlin Hbf with the overnight to Malmö, the sole (seasonal) passenger working on which it’s still possible to ride behind a member of this class.

Booked Passenger Workings

In recent years, 109 073 (now GVG 109-3) has had its own self-contained diagram working the German section of the Berlin Night Express, between Berlin Hbf and Sassnitz (and vice versa).  Neither the dates of operation nor the use of the 109 have yet been confirmed for 2019, but the season is usually between late June and early August (along with some extras around public holidays at other times of the year), with the train running each way three times a week.  This service is notable as the last remaining loco-hauled train in Northern Europe that operates via a train ferry.  A class 155 usually deputises on this turn when 109 073 is not available.

Forthcoming Railtour Workings

There are also occasional railtour duties in the calendar – currently all expected to be in the hands of 211 030 (the loco that would have received the DB number “109 030” if it had not been withdrawn by the DR in 1988).  A series of four are planned to operate on each Saturday in July 2019, under the “Störtebeker-Express” banner.
