Rc4 1166, had a notable claim to fame – along with a French CC21000, it had been loaned to Amtrak in the USA in 1977 for evaluation in advance of an order to replace its elderly GG1 express passenger electrics. Rc4 1166 impressed the Americans and orders were forthcoming off the back of its time in the States – indeed, Rc4 technology is only expected to disappear from American metals this year (2018) with the withdrawal of SEPTA’s last AEM-7 locomotive.
