The 1980s saw a number of Switzerland’s 1000mm railways modernise and a number of them received fleets of HGe4/4 II locomotives – 100km/h electric locos with four powered axles that could operate both on an adhesion and rack basis – which made them very useful indeed for the work that they would be intended to carry out.
