DB Regio Oberbayern have sourced a fleet of six 200km/h electrics from Škoda, based on the Czech class 380. These will be numbered 102 001 to 102 006. These, too, are styled by Porsche and have the official class nickname of “Emil Zátopek”, that being the name of a famed Czech long-distance runner of the post-war years.
Above is a link to a video uploaded to YouTube by user MotorCarTube, showing a walkaround of 102 003 at the InnoTrans expo in Berlin in 2016.
The 102s are intended to replace DB Fernverkehr class 101s on the DB Regio-operated Nürnberg to München high-speed services (those which the use high-speed line between Nürnberg and Ingolstadt). Although the locos are plated for 200km/h, the carriages – a new fleet of 36 double-deckers, also Škoda-built – are only good for 189km/h.
Forthcoming Workings
Having been intended for an entry to service in 2016, the project has been plagued by delays. At the time of writing (March 2018), these locomotives are yet to enter service, although are planned to do so during 2018. (Edit, November 2019: that hasn’t aged well… they’re still not in service…).
